- Hudhayfah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do not drink from gold or silver vessels, and do not wear silk or brocade. Verily, these are for unbelievers in the world and for us in the Hereafter.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5633, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2067
- Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi (authenticity agreed upon) according to Al-Bukhari and Muslim
- عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا تَشْرَبُوا فِي آنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَلَا تَلْبَسُوا الْحَرِيرَ وَالدِّيبَاجَ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَلَكُمْ فِي الْآخِرَةِ
- From Umm Salamah: The Prophet said: “Whoever drinks from a vessel of gold or silver, surely he has only filled his belly with the fire of Hell.” Sahih Muslim 2065 [1]
Scholarly consensus clarifies that this applies to all forms of dishware and cutlery, including plates, bowls, cups, and spoons. Utensils made of other materials (steel, glass, wood, or copper) are completely permissible.
