First Idolatry – times of Nabi Nuh/ Noah – Quran Chapter & Hadith- Narrations

Surah Al-‘Ankabut (29:14): States that Nuh/ Prophet Noah remained among his people for one thousand years minus fifty years before the flood overtook them. [1]
Surah Nuh (71:5-7): Nuh explains to Allah that he called his people night and day, publicly and secretly, but it only made them run further away;

SURAH NUH- NOAH – TRANSLATION OF QURAN KAREEM

1. Verily, We sent Nuh (Noah) to his people (Saying): “Warn your people before there comes to them a painful torment.”

2. He said: “O my people! Verily, I am a plain warner to you,

3. “That you should worship Allah (Alone), be dutiful to Him, and obey me,

4. “He (Allah) will forgive you of your sins and respite you to an appointed term. Verily, the term of Allah when it comes, cannot be delayed, if you but knew.”

5. He said: “O my Lord! Verily, I have called my people night and day (i.e. secretly and openly to accept the doctrine of Islamic Monotheism) ,

6. “But all my calling added nothing but to (their) flight (from the truth).

7. “And verily! Every time I called unto them that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, and persisted (in their refusal), and magnified themselves in pride.

8. “Then verily, I called to them openly (aloud);

9. “Then verily, I proclaimed to them in public, and I have appealed to them in private,

10. “I said (to them): ‘Ask forgiveness from your Lord; Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving;

11. ‘He will send rain to you in abundance;

12. ‘And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.’ “

13. What is the matter with you, [that you fear not Allah (His punishment), and] you hope not for reward (from Allah or you believe not in His Oneness).

14. While He has created you in (different) stages [i.e. first Nutfah, then ‘Alaqah and then Mudghah, see (V.23:13,14) the Qur’an].

15. See you not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another,

16. And has made the moon a light therein, and made the sun a lamp?

17. And Allah has brought you forth from the (dust of) earth. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol.29, Page 97].

18. Afterwards He will return you into it (the earth), and bring you forth (again on the Day of Resurrection)?

19. And Allah has made for you the earth wide spread (an expanse).

20. That you may go about therein in broad roads.

21. Nuh (Noah) said: “My Lord! They have disobeyed me, and followed one whose wealth and children give him no increase but only loss.

22. “And they have plotted a mighty plot.

23. “And they have said: ‘You shall not leave your gods, nor shall you leave Wadd, nor Suwa’, nor Yaghuth, nor Ya’uq, nor Nasr (names of the idols);

24. “And indeed they have led many astray. And (O Allah): ‘Grant no increase to the Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers, and disbelievers, etc.) save error.’ “

25. Because of their sins they were drowned, then were made to enter the Fire, and they found none to help them instead of Allah.

26. And Nuh (Noah) said: “My Lord! Leave not one of the disbelievers on the earth!

27. “If You leave them, they will mislead Your slaves, and they will beget none but wicked disbelievers.”

28. “My Lord! Forgive me, and my parents, and him who enters my home as a believer, and all the believing men and women. And to the Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers, and disbelievers, etc.) grant You no increase but destruction!”

 Narrated Ibn `Abbas (radiAllahu Anhu) :

All the idols which were worshiped by the people of Noah were worshiped by the Arabs later on. As for the idol Wadd, it was worshiped by the tribe of Kalb at Daumat-al-Jandal; Suwa` was the idol of (the tribe of) Hudhail; Yaghouth was worshiped by (the tribe of) Murad and then by Bani Ghutaif at Al-Jurf near Saba; Ya`uq was the idol of Hamdan, and Nasr was the idol of Himyar, the branch of Dhi-al-Kala`. The names (of the idols) formerly belonged to some pious men of the people of Noah, and when they died Satan inspired their people to (prepare and place idols at the places where they used to sit, and to call those idols by their names. The people did so, but the idols were not worshiped till those people (who initiated them) had died and the origin of the idols had become obscure, whereupon people began worshiping them.

حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُوسَى، أَخْبَرَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، وَقَالَ، عَطَاءٌعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ صَارَتِ الأَوْثَانُ الَّتِي كَانَتْ فِي قَوْمِ نُوحٍ فِي الْعَرَبِ بَعْدُ، أَمَّا وُدٌّ كَانَتْ لِكَلْبٍ بِدَوْمَةِ الْجَنْدَلِ، وَأَمَّا سُوَاعٌ كَانَتْ لِهُذَيْلٍ، وَأَمَّا يَغُوثُ فَكَانَتْ لِمُرَادٍ ثُمَّ لِبَنِي غُطَيْفٍ بِالْجُرُفِ عِنْدَ سَبَا، وَأَمَّا يَعُوقُ فَكَانَتْ لِهَمْدَانَ، وَأَمَّا نَسْرٌ فَكَانَتْ لِحِمْيَرَ، لآلِ ذِي الْكَلاَعِ‏.‏ أَسْمَاءُ رِجَالٍ صَالِحِينَ مِنْ قَوْمِ نُوحٍ، فَلَمَّا هَلَكُوا أَوْحَى الشَّيْطَانُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِمْ أَنِ انْصِبُوا إِلَى مَجَالِسِهِمُ الَّتِي كَانُوا يَجْلِسُونَ أَنْصَابًا، وَسَمُّوهَا بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ فَفَعَلُوا فَلَمْ تُعْبَدْ حَتَّى إِذَا هَلَكَ أُولَئِكَ وَتَنَسَّخَ الْعِلْمُ عُبِدَتْ‏.‏

Ka’ab ibn Malik (R.A) said, “When I greeted the Messenger of Allah, whose face was glittering with happiness, for whenever Allah’s Messenger ﷺ was happy, his face used to glitter, as if it was a piece of the moon, and we used to recognize it (i.e. his happiness) from his face.” Once Al-Baraa (R.A) was asked whether the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ face was like the sword to which he replied: No, it was like the moon.

On the authority of Umm Ma‘bad ‘Atikah bint Khalid al-Khuza‘iyyah (ra) who said: ’I saw a man of visible radiance and purity, beautiful appearance, bright faced, with neither protruding ribs nor a small head, handsome and fair. His eyes were deep black and large, and his eyelashes were lush. His voice was mellow and soft. The whiteness of his eyes was bright and his pupils were very black. His eyebrows were beautifully arched and connected. His neck was long, his beard densely full. When he was silent, he appeared dignified. When he spoke, he was eminent and crowned with magnificence. His speech was sweet, his words precise, neither too little nor too much. Like a string of pearls flowing down gradually.

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas:
The Prophet (#) said: “Il was shown the Hell-fire and that the majority of its dwellers were women who were ungrateful.” It was asked, “Do they disbelieve in Allah?” (or are they ungrateful to Allah?) He replied, “They are ungrateful to their husbands and are ungrateful for the favors and the good (charitable deeds) done to them. If you have always been good (benevolent) to one of them and then she sees something in you (not of her liking), she will say, ‘l have never received any good from you.”

Distributing Zakah – Hadith

Narrated Sa’d:
Allah’s Messenger (#) distributed (Zakat) amongst (a group of) people while | was sitting there but Allah’s Messenger (#) left a man whom | thought the best of the lot. | asked, “O Allah’s Messenger (#)! Why have you left that person? By Allah | regard him as a faithful believer.” The Prophet (#) commented: “Or merely a Muslim.” | remained quiet for a while, but could not help repeating my question because of what | knew about him. And then asked Allah’s Messenger (#), “Why have you left so and so? By Allah! He is a faithful believer.” The Prophet (#) again said, “Or merely a Muslim.” And | could not help repeating my question because of what | knew about him. Then the Prophet (#) said, “O Sa’d! | give to a person while another is dearer to me, for fear that he might be thrown on his face in the Fire by Allah.”

Do Not Eat from Gold and Silver Dishes

  • Hudhayfah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do not drink from gold or silver vessels, and do not wear silk or brocade. Verily, these are for unbelievers in the world and for us in the Hereafter.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5633, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2067
  • Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi (authenticity agreed upon) according to Al-Bukhari and Muslim
  • عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا تَشْرَبُوا فِي آنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَلَا تَلْبَسُوا الْحَرِيرَ وَالدِّيبَاجَ فَإِنَّهَا لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَلَكُمْ فِي الْآخِرَةِ
  • From Umm Salamah: The Prophet said: “Whoever drinks from a vessel of gold or silver, surely he has only filled his belly with the fire of Hell.” Sahih Muslim 2065 [1]

Scholarly consensus clarifies that this applies to all forms of dishware and cutlery, including plates, bowls, cups, and spoons. Utensils made of other materials (steel, glass, wood, or copper) are completely permissible.

Miqdam bin Madikarib said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must (fill it), then one third of food, one third for drink and one third for air.’”
حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ الْحِمْصِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَتْنِي أُمِّي، عَنْ أُمِّهَا، أَنَّهَا سَمِعَتِ الْمِقْدَامَ بْنَ مَعْدِيكَرِبَ، يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ يَقُولُ ‏ “‏ مَا مَلأَ آدَمِيٌّ وِعَاءً شَرًّا مِنْ بَطْنٍ حَسْبُ الآدَمِيِّ لُقَيْمَاتٌ يُقِمْنَ صُلْبَهُ فَإِنْ غَلَبَتِ الآدَمِيَّ نَفْسُهُ فَثُلُثٌ لِلطَّعَامِ وَثُلُثٌ لِلشَّرَابِ وَثُلُثٌ لِلنَّفَسِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ Grade: Sahih – Sunah Ibn Majah 3349;

Praising Allah azza wa Jal – SubhanAllahi wa Bihamdihi

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever is distressed by the night (i.e., can’t sleep), is miserly with wealth (i.e., reluctant to spend), and is cowardly in facing the enemy (i.e., reluctant to fight), should say often: ‘Subhan Allah wa bi-hamdihi’ (Glorified is Allah with His praise). For indeed it is more beloved to Allah than a mountain of gold and silver spent in the path of Allah.”
[Reference: Al-Mu’jam al-Awsat by Tabarani, Hadith #6482 (graded Sahih by Albani)].

“If you combine these five meanings in your heart while supplicating to Allah, mention them with your tongue, and then ask Him for your need… be glad, be glad, be glad! By Allah, He won’t send you back disappointed:

1. Praising and thanking Him
2. Seeking forgiveness, turning to Him in repentance
3. Needy, humble, and broken
4. Certain, having good thoughts, and trusting Him
5. Submitting, entrusting, and surrendering

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “Whoever says, ‘Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi,’ one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins (minor sins) even if they were as much as the foam of the sea. Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 6405; In-book reference : Book 80, Hadith 100

Sea Water is Pure

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about sea water and he said, “Its water is purifying for ablution, and its dead animals are lawful to eat.”

Al-Tirmidhi said, “It is the opinion of most of the jurists among the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, such as Abu Bakr, Umar, and Ibn Abbas, that they saw nothing wrong with sea water for ablution. It was disliked by some of the companions, such as Ibn Umar and Abdullah ibn Amr.” Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 69; Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Tirmidhi

Treatment of Slaves – Hadith

Although slavery as practiced before Islamic times – there are some limits to which slaves should be referred to, treated and/ or freed by Islamic Standards;

DO NOT REFER TO ANYONE AS “MY SLAVE”

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do not refer to anyone as ‘my slave,’ for all of you are the slaves of Allah. Rather, you should refer to him as ‘my young man.’ The servant should not refer to anyone as ‘my lord,’ but rather he should refer to him as ‘my master.’”

SINS ARE FROM IGNORANCE AND A SINNER IS NOT A DISBELIEVER UNLESS HE WORSHIPS OTHERS ALONG WITH ALLAH ‘AZZA WA JAL

At Ar-Rabadha I met Abu Dhar who was wearing a cloak, and his slave, too, was wearing a similar one. I asked about the reason for it. He replied, “I abused a person by calling his mother with bad names.” The Prophet said to me, ‘O Abu Dhar! Did you abuse him by calling his mother with bad names You still have some characteristics of ignorance. Your slaves are your brothers and Allah has put them under your command. So whoever has a brother under his command should feed him of what he eats and dress him of what he wears. Do not ask them (slaves) to do things beyond their capacity (power) and if you do so, then help them.’ “ (Notice some of these rights are more than what an emplyoyer does today – to eat and feed his workers similar to what he has);

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ وَاصِلٍ الأَحْدَبِ، عَنِ الْمَعْرُورِ، قَالَ لَقِيتُ أَبَا ذَرٍّ بِالرَّبَذَةِ، وَعَلَيْهِ حُلَّةٌ، وَعَلَى غُلاَمِهِ حُلَّةٌ، فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَابَبْتُ رَجُلاً، فَعَيَّرْتُهُ بِأُمِّهِ، فَقَالَ لِيَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏”‏ يَا أَبَا ذَرٍّ أَعَيَّرْتَهُ بِأُمِّهِ إِنَّكَ امْرُؤٌ فِيكَ جَاهِلِيَّةٌ، إِخْوَانُكُمْ خَوَلُكُمْ، جَعَلَهُمُ اللَّهُ تَحْتَ أَيْدِيكُمْ، فَمَنْ كَانَ أَخُوهُ تَحْتَ يَدِهِ فَلْيُطْعِمْهُ مِمَّا يَأْكُلُ، وَلْيُلْبِسْهُ مِمَّا يَلْبَسُ، وَلاَ تُكَلِّفُوهُمْ مَا يَغْلِبُهُمْ، فَإِنْ كَلَّفْتُمُوهُمْ فَأَعِينُوهُمْ ‏”‏‏.‏ Sahih al Bukhari, Book 2 – Hadith 23;

HADITH ON FREEDOM: THE PROPHET(SAW) FREES A BELIVING SLAVE GIRL (DUE TO A SLAP OF A SLAVE OWNER)

Mua’wiyah ibn al-Hakam reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have a servant-girl whom I slapped.” That upset the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I said to him, “Shall I emancipate her?” The Prophet said, “Bring her to me.” Then, she was brought and the Prophet said, “Where is Allah?” She said, “In heaven.” The Prophet said, “Who am I?” She said, “You are the Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet said, “Free her, for she is a believer.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 537; Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Muslim

عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ السُّلَمِيِّ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ جَارِيَةٌ لِي صَكَكْتُهَا صَكَّةً فَعَظَّمَ ذَلِكَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ أَفَلَا أُعْتِقُهَا قَالَ ائْتِنِي بِهَا قَالَ فَجِئْتُ بِهَا قَالَ أَيْنَ اللَّهُ قَالَتْ فِي السَّمَاءِ قَالَ مَنْ أَنَا قَالَتْ أَنْتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَعْتِقْهَا فَإِنَّهَا مُؤْمِنَةٌ

Who are the Believers and the Formation of the Embryo – Surah Al Muminoon/ The Believers

SURAH AL MUMINOON – In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.

1. Successful are the believers. 2. Those who are humble in their prayers. 3. Those who avoid nonsense. 4. Those who work for charity. 5. Those who safeguard their chastity. 6. Except from their spouses, or their dependents—for they are free from blame. 7. But whoever seeks anything beyond that—these are the transgressors. 8. Those who are faithful to their trusts and pledges.

9. Those who safeguard their prayers. 10. These are the inheritors. 11. Who will inherit Paradise, wherein they will dwell forever.

12. We created man from an extract of clay. 13. Then We made him a seed, in a secure repository. 14. Then We developed the seed into a clot. Then We developed the clot into a lump. Then We developed the lump into bones. Then We clothed the bones with flesh. Then We produced it into another creature. Most Blessed is God, the Best of Creators.

15. Then, after that, you will die. 16. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be resurrected.

We were Created to be Tested

Creation in Darkness and He cast over them His Light

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah Almighty created His creation in darkness and He cast over them His light. Whoever is touched by that light is guided, and whoever misses it is led astray. Thus, I say the pens have been dried upon the knowledge of Allah.”

THE WRITING OF THE PEN (FATE/ DESTINY/ DIVINE DECREE) & CREATION OF THE UNIVERSE

‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, the first to be created by Allah was the pen. Allah told it to write, so it wrote all that will exist until forever.” Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3319; Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Albani

عن عبادة بن الصامت عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ الْقَلَمَ فَقَالَ لَهُ اكْتُبْ فَجَرَى بِمَا هُوَ كَائِنٌ إِلَى الْأَبَدِ; 3319 سنن الترمذي كتاب تفسير القرآن باب ومن سورة ن والقلم;3319 المحدث الألباني خلاصة حكم المحدث صحيح في صحيح الترمذي

The Pen is also mentioned in the Qur’an, in the 68th chapter, Al-Qalam. This chapter describes God’s justice and the day of judgment.

The hadeeth of Abdullaah Ibn `Amr Ibn Al-`Aas which is ascribed to Allaah’s Messenger (salallaahu `alahi wassallam): ‘Allaah wrote the decree of all of creation 50,000 years before the creation of the heavens and the earth. And His Throne was over the water.’
(Reported by Muslim, 2653);

Allah azza wa Jal created the Heavens and earth in 6 days
Sura 32: AS-SAJDA (THE PROSTRATION) – Juz’ 21 – Translation Qarib rاللَّهُ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فِي سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَى عَلَى الْعَرْشِ مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ دُونِهِ مِنْ وَلِيٍّ وَلَا شَفِيعٍ أَفَلَا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ ﴿۴
﴾It was Allah, who, in six days created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, and then willed to the Throne. You have no guardian nor intercessor other than Him. Will you not remember? (4) يُدَبِّرُ الْأَمْرَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ يَعْرُجُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ مِمَّا تَعُدُّونَ ﴿۵﴾He directs the affair from heaven to earth. Then it will ascend to Him in one day, a day whose value is a thousand years by your reckoning. (5)

Ibn Abbas narrated that :

the Prophet said: “Jibril (peace be upon him) led me (in Salat) twice at the House. So he prayed Zuhr the first time when the shadow was similar to (the length of) the strap a sandal. Then he prayed Asr when everything was similar (to the length of) its shadow. Then he prayed Maghrib when the sun had set and the fasting person breaks fast. Then he prayed Isha when the twilight had vanished. Then he prayed Fajr when Fajr (dawn) began, and when eating is prohibited for the fasting person. The second time he prayed Zuhr when the shadow of everything was similar to (the length of) it, at the time of Asr the day before. Then he prayed Asr when the shadow of everything was about twice as long as it. Then he prayed Maghrib at the same time as he did the first time. Then he prayed Isha, the later one, when a third of the night had gone. Then he prayed Subh when the land glowed. Then Jibril turned towards me and said: “O Muhammad! These are the times of the Prophets before you, and the (best) time is what is between these two times.” ( : Jami` at-Tirmidhi 149);

حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَيَّاشِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ، عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ، وَهُوَ ابْنُ عَبَّادِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعُ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ “‏ أَمَّنِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ عِنْدَ الْبَيْتِ مَرَّتَيْنِ فَصَلَّى الظُّهْرَ فِي الأُولَى مِنْهُمَا حِينَ كَانَ الْفَىْءُ مِثْلَ الشِّرَاكِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى الْعَصْرَ حِينَ كَانَ كُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِثْلَ ظِلِّهِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى الْمَغْرِبَ حِينَ وَجَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ وَأَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ ثُمَّ صَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ حِينَ غَابَ الشَّفَقُ ثُمَّ صَلَّى الْفَجْرَ حِينَ بَرَقَ الْفَجْرُ وَحَرُمَ الطَّعَامُ عَلَى الصَّائِمِ ‏.‏ وَصَلَّى الْمَرَّةَ الثَّانِيَةَ الظُّهْرَ حِينَ كَانَ ظِلُّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِثْلَهُ لِوَقْتِ الْعَصْرِ بِالأَمْسِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى الْعَصْرَ حِينَ كَانَ ظِلُّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِثْلَيْهِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى الْمَغْرِبَ لِوَقْتِهِ الأَوَّلِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ الآخِرَةَ حِينَ ذَهَبَ ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ ثُمَّ صَلَّى الصُّبْحَ حِينَ أَسْفَرَتِ الأَرْضُ ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ إِلَىَّ جِبْرِيلُ فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ هَذَا وَقْتُ الأَنْبِيَاءِ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ ‏.‏ وَالْوَقْتُ فِيمَا بَيْنَ هَذَيْنِ الْوَقْتَيْنِ ‏” ‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَبُرَيْدَةَ وَأَبِي مُوسَى وَأَبِي مَسْعُودٍ الأَنْصَارِيِّ وَأَبِي سَعِيدٍ وَجَابِرٍ وَعَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ وَالْبَرَاءِ وَأَنَسٍ ‏.‏

Angel Jibril (Gabriel) visited the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them) over two consecutive days at the Kaaba to demonstrate and establish the exact timings for the five daily prayers. He led the prayers at their earliest times on day one, and their latest permissible times on day two.

The starting and ending bounds of these prayer periods are defined as follows:

Fajr (Subh): Begins at the break of dawn (when the first true horizontal light appears) and ends just before the sun rises.

Dhuhr (Noon): Begins immediately after the sun passes its highest zenith.

Asr (Afternoon): Begins when an object’s shadow is equal to its own length, and ends before the sun turns yellow or sets.

Maghrib (Sunset): Begins immediately after the sun has completely set and ends when the red twilight disappears.

Isha (Night): Begins when the red twilight disappears and lasts until the middle or two-thirds of the night.

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar (ra), who said:The Messenger of Allah (saw) took me by the shoulder and said,

“Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a wayfarer.”

And Ibn Umar (ra) used to say,

“In the evening do not expect [to live until] the morning, and in the morning do not expect [to live until] the evening. Take [advantage of] your health before times of sickness, and [take advantage of] your life before your death.” [Bukhari]
