The Nature of Allah

In Islam, the nature of Allah is defined by Tawhid (the absolute oneness and unity of God), meaning He is unique, eternal, and has no partners or equals. He is both transcendent (beyond human comprehension and physical limitations) and immanent (close to His creation), possessing 99 beautiful names that describe His mercy, power, and justice.

KNOWING ALLAH (SWA) NATURE THROUGH HIS NAMES AND ATTIRBUTES

Allah has more Names than ninety-nine. The authentic hadith establishes a special reward for whoever encompasses these ninety-nine, but it does not limit the Names of Allah to that number. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught a supplication recorded in Musnad Ahmad in which he asks Allah by every Name He has named Himself with, revealed in His Book, taught to any of His creation, or kept in the knowledge of the unseen. This indicates that Allah possesses Names beyond those known to mankind.

The specific enumerated list attached to some narrations of the ninety-nine Names in Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Sunan Ibn Majah is regarded by many hadith scholars as an addition from later transmitters rather than the direct words of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. For this reason, scholars have differed regarding the exact enumeration of the ninety-nine Names. The Names presented on this page are derived directly from the Quran and authentic Sunnah, following a methodology informed by scholars such as Ibn al-Qayyim, Al-Ghazali, Ibn Hazm, Al-Qurtubi, and Abd al-Razzaq al-Badr.

As Ibn al-Qayyim explained, encompassing the Names of Allah means more than simply memorizing them. It includes three things: memorizing them, understanding what they reveal about Allah, and worshipping and calling upon Allah through them. Memorization alone fulfills only part of what the hadith intends. The ultimate purpose is for these Names to deepen your knowledge of your Lord, strengthen your worship, and shape the way you live.
